Remembering Brent Anderson #76693

Today we share the sad news of the passing of our dear friend, Brent Anderson. During the June Monthly at the Freedom Center, Brent went into cardiac arrest. His card mates, Rob Romich and Kim Brennan acted immediately calling 911, administering CPR and directing the EMS team to the scene. Rob and Kim did everything right, and the EMS arrived on scene incredibly fast (the fire station is only 3 miles from the course), but it was not to be.

Every time he showed up for a round of disc golf, Brent’s zeal for life and contagious enthusiasm was evident. You couldn’t tell if Brent had shot poorly or great because his positive attitude was always the same. “Oh well” he would often say, “at least I’m, playing disc golf!” Brent was a generous man. He never took a dollar home after placing in a Monthly or a weekly doubles event always saying “Donate it to Freedom!”. He was just as generous with his time. Rain or shine, wind and snow, Brent was working with us shoulder to shoulder at Freedom Center helping make that course a reality.

Brent often spoke of how he got into the game of disc golf. He started playing at Franklin Park for the exercise. Brent would play and his beloved wife Cheryl would tag along for the walk. As passionate as Brent was about Disc Golf, he always made time for his other friends and interests like his annual Golf outing and fishing trip to South Carolina. More than anything, Brent was a family man. The morning of his passing, he had just finished preparing for a birthday party for his granddaughter. When Brent showed up late today, for which we teased him a bit, he let us know that he had to leave 1:00 pm sharp so he could be with his family.

We will miss our friend dearly and wish to honor his memory. We will raise funds for a hole sponsorship at Freedom Center. Hole 17 will forever be Brent Anderson’s. Those wishing to make a contribution in Brent’s honor may contact us at [email protected] also, Brent’s birthday is September 23rd and 34th. Coincidentally, that is the date of the LoCo Open this year. In his honor, the LoCo Open will be henceforth be known as the Brent Anderson Memorial LoCo Open. We think is a fitting tribute to our departed friend.

Share the Warmth

Once again, LoCo Disc Golf Club is partnering with Thrive DC to hold our second annual “Share the Warmth” winter clothes drive.

As you begin to prepare switch out your wardrobe in anticipation of the coming colder months, please take a moment to set aside any coats, hoodies, gloves, hats, scarves, blankets, and even sleeping bags you no longer need and bring them with you to the LoCo November Monthly at Franklin Park. We’ll collect everything and drop it off in time for Thrive DC’s next distribution event.

Especially desired are men’s coats in sizes XL and larger since many of Thrive DC’s patrons like to layer up during the winter. Don’t have any used winter items? No problem. Thrive DC also is asking for packages of new socks and thermals.

LoCo Disc Golf Club Feeds the Hungry of Loudoun County

Purcellville, Va. (March 9, 2016)—Members of the LoCo Disc Golf Club reached new heights this year by raising $5,600 and donating 230 pounds of food for Loudoun Interfaith Relief during their annual LoCo Ice Bowl tournament at Franklin Park in Purcellville, VA on Saturday, February 27th 2015.

The LoCo Ice Bowl is part of an international series of winter disc golf events dedicated to fighting hunger. Since 1996, over $3.1 million dollars have been raised via Ice Bowl® disc golf tournaments. The LoCo Ice Bowl, through the efforts of the LoCo Disc Golf Club, has raised over $10,000 and 580 pounds of food over the past 5 years, with 100% of donations going directly to Loudoun Interfaith Relief.

This year’s LoCo Ice Bowl was originally scheduled to take place on January 23rd, 2016 but had to be postponed due to blizzard conditions that dropped up to 3 feet of snow in the region. Even though the first rule of the Ice Bowl is, “Under no circumstances, may an Ice Bowl® be cancelled or postponed because of weather conditions”, with wind gusts up to 50mph and many roadways impassable, Loudoun County closed all facilities, including Franklin Park, making the postponement necessary.

The good news is that, by delaying the event for one month, club members had more time to raise money and collect food for Loudoun Interfaith Relief, and that almost certainly helped the club exceed its stretch goal of $5,000 in cash donations for 2016.

Loudoun Interfaith Relief is Loudoun’s largest food pantry serving more than 15,000 people annually through more than 30,000 visits.  Forty three percent of those served are children. For more information, visit their website at www.interfaithrelief.org.
